Colonial Downs Racetrack

Jimmy was selected to be honored at the Colonial Downs Horse Racetrack in our area. We were there with 8 other Army Families and we had a blast! Limos came to pick us up and drove us to the race track which is about one hour away. They gave us a private suite with our own balcony, bar, waitstaff, endless food, and betting machine. A race was dedicated to each Army family and then we were interviewed. We felt like high rollers!

XTERRA 21K Richmond

This staircase was no joke.


This last Saturday I ended up running the XTERRA Xduro 21K or half marathon in Richmond. For those of you that don't know the XTERRA races are based around outdoor mountain/trail type settings. I had seen a couple on TV and knew they always threw in good obstacles and stuff to make the run more interesting. Boy was that an understatement. The run ended up being the hardest physical thing I have ever done, even harder then a full marathon.


Within the first two miles they already introduce three long steep staircases that destroy your legs right off the bat. About 80% of the run was done in windy one person width bike trails that seemed like they were all uphill. Then when you would finally get to a downhill portion the trails were so rocky and uneven you had to slow yourself down just enough to be careful and negate the downhill effect. I will say for all it worth that the race was definitely the most interesting and exciting run I have ever competed in. There were no mile markers so you never knew how far you had gone and there were numerous natural and artificial obstacles that you were either running across (like a 2 foot wide uphill concrete slab over a ravine below) or running through (multiple water crossings and a river that you had to cross by jumping from rock to rock).

I definitely plan on doing one again, but next time I will do much more hill work and know what I am getting into.

Organization Day aka Company BBQ

A few weeks ago the clinic I work at had its annual Organization Day. This pretty much amounts to a company BBQ. Normally it is at a park or a lake or other recreation spot. This year it was at the Hideaway, a park on the base. It had a luau theme and there was roughly 200 people there. A local BBQ place catered, but the food wasn't that good. The year prior they just cooked their own hamburgers and hot dogs and I would have been fine with that again this year.

Mary and I joined in the festivities with a couple games of horseshoes. I hadn't played since I was little and it definately showed. We also played the game where you throw waterballons back and forth until one breaks, which ultimately turned into a waterballoon fight. I ended up getting blasted by a girl that was trying to hit some guy behind me.

I figured the BBQ was about over at that point, but then a lady I work with pulled me on the dance floor to teach me the Cupid Shuffle and the Cha-Cha. I ended up being an instant hit with the older ladies. It was definately much easier to "dance by number" as I call it then try and make stuff up on your own.
